2020 Project Feature: Mount Waverley

2020 ProjEct feature: Mount Waverley

Step inside our incredibly grand renovation, filled with stunning details and the finest of finishes. This classic, multi-million dollar home is nestled in the leafy suburb of Mount Waverley. The renovated space features light-filled interiors, open-plan living, opulent dining and kitchen areas, five bedrooms, four bathrooms, three separate living areas, a large swimming pool and tennis court.

The brief

Our clients were busy professionals, looking to work with a high-quality builder who could bring their design (crafted by a reputable and multi-award-winning architect) to life. The brief for their renovation involved upgrading the main building and barbecue area while undertaking minor renovations and maintenance works to the garage, gym, pool and tennis court. The budget for the entire project was $1.5 million.

The project

This renovation was a significant undertaking. Our team at Edina Building Group were required to:

  • Fully renovate the existing two-storey home and BBQ area,
  • Foundation restorations and underground pipework upgrade,
  • Undertake structural changes, including loading bearing wall removal
  • Install a new exposed concrete driveway, sidewalk and water fountain
  • Construction of external brick fence with automated metal gates.

Our team

Renovating is very different to building a brand new home, and it requires a specialist team of experts to pull off a renovation of this style and size. At Edina Building Group, we have a hand-selected team of experienced site managers who ensure we are adhering to our quality standards, oversee risk assessment and prepare the site so we can commence work efficiently. All our trades people were carefully selected to ensure the resulting home was of the highest quality.

Custom is in the detail

The first thing guests will notice as they enter the delicate French doors at this graceful residence is the little details that exude luxury – perfectly carved architraves, bespoke tiling and a beautiful floating timber staircase among them.

All of the bespoke finishes – from appliances to plumbing and electrical fixtures – were carefully selected alongside our in-house design team from a high-end market. These were all in a classic yet grand style, which matched the original home.

Some really special exterior features include custom-made roof trusses, Veranda and porch custom columns, Terracotta roof tiles and new dormer windows. Inside, we installed Subzero and Miele fridges, an induction cooktop, shaker panel-style kitchen cabinetry, classical design wall panel to living areas, Heat & Glo fireplaces, Herringbone and Versailles French oak parquetry flooring and mosaic tiles.

While this may be a classic home, this renovation placed an emphasis on energy efficiency. This saw us install a fully-automated lighting system and five separate units of reversible ducted cooling and heating to ensure fresh air could flow throughout the home in a cost-effective manner.

Challenges

With a project as big as this you’re bound to run into a few challenges. Our extension of the first-floor ceiling height and removal of existing roof tiles resulted in having to fully modify the layout of the roof trusses. But our experienced crew of carpenters and roof tilers were able to resolve this issue quickly on site.

Melbourne’s rainy season also came in heavy this year, but our team were dedicated to delivering this project ahead of schedule. We managed to work through less than ideal weather conditions, even tarping the entire roof so we could continue to work no matter rain, hail or shine.

With years of experience working on high-end renovations, we’ve gathered the skills and expertise needed to tackle this kind of large and rewarding undertaking. A renovation of this calibre required a detail-oriented and highly organised builder – something we pride ourselves on here at Edina Building Group.

It was important that we allocated teams to different aspects of the project and sought out a talented crew who could deliver on both perfection and quality. A deep understanding of structure and design was also required, as this project saw the need for quick thinking and the ability to make considered changes on the go.
